Bridging the Gap:
How Associations Can Reimagine Professional Development

Associations have always been trusted sources of learning and connection. But today’s members want something more—education that’s flexible, personalized, and built for how they actually learn.

A recent Associations Now article highlights findings from Momentive Software’s “Bridging the Gap” survey, which reveal a growing disconnect between what members want from professional development and what associations are currently providing. A related need often appears around training material printing, especially when related program administration and stakeholder communication have to stay consistent.

According to the report, nearly half of members say job opportunities and career development are “very important,” yet fewer than one in four association professionals recognize that as a top priority. There’s also a 35-point gap between members who want short video learning and associations that offer it, and a 41-point gap for those who want recommended learning paths.

Those numbers highlight an opportunity for associations to play to their strengths—credibility, expertise, and trusted content. For a more informed view of bridging the gap: how repurposing content helps associations save time and engage more members, this reference can help explain the tradeoffs behind the workflow considerations that influence next steps.

The Good News: The Gap Is Solvable

These gaps aren’t permanent. They reflect how quickly member expectations and learning formats have changed.

Many associations still rely on conferences, workshops, and certification programs to deliver education. Those programs remain valuable, but they don’t always fit the daily reality of busy professionals who need shorter, more flexible ways to learn.

As we shared in How Associations Can Better Compete in a Growing Training Market, members now have endless learning choices—from online platforms to microcredentials. What those options often lack is community, trust, and relevance. Associations already offer all three. What’s missing is accessibility and adaptability.

The opportunity isn’t to reinvent education. It’s time to rethink how it’s delivered.

Why the Disconnect Exists

There are practical reasons this gap persists:

  • Limited time and staff. Many associations juggle conferences, publications, webinars, and member services, leaving little room for innovation.
  • Revenue pressures. Conferences and sponsorships fund much of an association’s work, so new formats can feel risky.
  • Legacy systems and habits. Complex processes and approval cycles can make it hard to move quickly.

These challenges are common, but they’re not insurmountable. Many organizations are already finding creative ways forward by repurposing materials, testing microlearning, and blending print and digital to reach members wherever they are. For related initiatives, learning how print k-12 course materials works can help organizations manage course material production, ordering, and distribution with less manual coordination.

What Members Are Really Asking For

Members aren’t asking associations to abandon their strengths. They’re asking for:

  • Flexibility – learning that fits around work and life.
  • Personalization – education that aligns with their goals and skill levels.
  • Relevance – content that feels timely and practical.
  • Connection – opportunities to learn with peers, not alone.

Younger members, especially Gen Z professionals, expect learning that’s interactive, visual, and continuous. As we noted in Are Your Educational Programs Ready for Gen Z?, they value short, on-demand content that helps them apply new knowledge right away.

Associations are uniquely positioned to meet those needs. They already bring together experts, curate trusted information, and foster belonging. The next step is packaging that expertise in ways that make learning easier to access and apply.

Rethinking Professional Development for Today’s Learners

Closing the gap doesn’t require sweeping change. It starts with a few practical shifts:

  • Repurpose what you already have. Conference recordings, slide decks, and manuals can become short, on-demand lessons or curated learning paths.
  • Design for every learner. Combine print, digital, and hybrid materials to support different preferences and improve accessibility.
  • Use technology wisely. AI and automation can help surface relevant content, personalize recommendations, and lighten staff workloads.

These steps aren’t about doing more—they’re about doing things differently. Every association, regardless of size or budget, can begin modernizing its approach to learning.
